Primeware: Essential Books & Gear for Beer Hiking Adventures

There is an increasing number of books with beer hiking ideas and stories from all over the world. If you buy online, I highly recommend using Bookshop.org – They have a great selection, and you can support an independent bookstore by designating them to receive all of the profits from your purchase. Please shop from my curated list of Beer Hiking books on Bookshop.org – including my book “Beer Hiking Southern Rockies”

You can also buy my book, “Beer Hiking Southern Rockies” on Amazon if you must — here is the link to use — with co-author Yitka Wynn, I describe beer hiking travels in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona — pairing a hike with a brewery visit in each chapter.

My Beer Hiker’s Journal is available as a “print-on-demand” publication from Amazon. I use the journal myself to keep notes and information about hikes and beer pairings. The journal pages prompt you to record information about hikes and beers, or you can go freeform. Each journal page features a chalkboard image with snippets of witty beer-hiking wisdom I’ve encountered on my travels. Reference pages have info that I use to jog my thinking about describing beers, tastes, hops, and glassware. Another reference page is a lengthy listing of significant annual beery events around the world. Each journal provides enough pages to record 40 beer hikes and paired beers. A hiker needs a great hiking stick. I’ve had this one for years. I like it because it is easy to break down when I get to the taproom. It is stout, sturdy, natural, and I can nail my stocknagels to it if I want. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

Another tiny and lightweight regular in my hiking kit is this dependable emergency water filter. It’s not as refreshing as beer, but when you need water it’s a godsend. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

My go-to day pack when I’m not carrying much. Great if I only need a jacket, water, Chromebook, and a couple of other things. Folds into itself for packing. Inexpensive, but durable – good value. Lots of color choices. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

A lot like the sling pack above, but carries lots more stuff. I use this for longer and multi-day hikes Also folds into itself for packing. Also inexpensive, but durable – good value. Lots of color choices. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

A standard lightweight inclusion in my daypack is this inflatable, solar lantern. It collapses to almost nothing, and it has lasted for years and is still going strong. Mellow beerlight when you need it. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

This is a frill to be sure, but every once in a while I want to impress someone I’m hiking with. Unbreakable, BPA-free, and it shows off a beautiful beer oh so well. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

When you can’t get enough of that beery flavor. I like jelly beans as a trail snack. Jelly Belly makes some of the best. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

My current camera is this Panasonic Lumix. I often need more than what I can do with a phone camera. I shudder at camera prices, so I search hard for value. Recent photos on Prime Passages are taken either with my iPhone or with this camera. It is lightweight and relatively inexpensive. This quick-release camera mount is essential as far as I’m concerned. I use it on my daypack shoulder strap (like in the upper right view), although there are several other ways you can rig it. It keeps my camera protected and easily accessible. I get asked about this more than any other piece of gear when I am hiking. These have been my go-to hiking sandals for several years now, testing terrain from Germany to Austria, from Belgium to Cyprus, from Nepal to Bhutan, and all around the USA. Sturdy, light, breathable, quick-drying, sure-gripping — they have never let me down. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.

When I need the protection of a boot, my current pick is the Asolo Eldo mid-cut. Incredibly lightweight and comfortable, yet sturdy and up for rugged terrain. I’ve put these to use in the Alps, Rockies, and the Himalayas, and they don’t show much wear and tear yet. I’ve only tried the men’s version, but there is also a ladies’ version. I’ve never regretted my investment in the quality of this rolling duffle. I take it when I’m going for many weeks at a time and want lots of capacity. It has been manhandled around the world and seemingly can’t be damaged. Amazon link.

For shorter trips and lighter loads, I use this one. The duffle above sold me on the quality and durability of Eagle Creek, so I bought this one and have never been disappointed. I have every reason to believe this one will last me for the rest of my days. Here is the Amazon link to have a closer look, learn more, and buy if you like.
