Red Chile on Route 66

ManniesSignI’m starting a weekend roadtrip in New Mexico for the weekend in very enjoyable fashion with a breakfast special of red chile rubbed pork tenderloin and eggs at Mannie’s Family Restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Mannie’s is located in the Nob Hill district adjacent to the University of New Mexico campus on old Route 66 (Central Avenue).  This is an old school family diner with well-trained, smiling waitresses, and good food that is inexpensive.  The red chile here is as good as it gets in my book and priced at $6.95 with a large portion of tenderloin, eggs, hash browns, and big slices of whole wheat toast seems an excellent value.  The red chile rub gives a nice, spicy glow without being too spicy or overpowering.

Nob Hill is an eclectic, interesting stretch of shops, dining, and treat places with many remnants of the old Route 66 look and feel.

Mannie’s has been here since 1965, but is well kept and clean.  I’m settled into a comfortable booth next to one of the many large windows and I’m camped here for a bit using the free wifi while my wife is attending to some business in Albuquerque.  Looking out the window across the street at the new Panera Bread chain store, I have to admit to scoffing a bit — hard to explain what that’s about.  There is a time and place for the chain stores, but not with good red chile at hand.  Mannie’s is open seven days, 6am to 9pm.  I’ll be back!

Do you know a place for red chile that’s worth talking about?

Mary & Tito’s has amazing red. Their food is delicious, plentiful, and inexpensive. One of my family’s favorite places in Abq.
